How Andrew and the Caddell Family Got Started in Racing
Sometimes at night from our front yard Andrew could hear the karts practicing at the Mt. Highway Kart Track. The track is owned and operated by the Puget Sound Go Kart Association.
They lived only about 1 mile from the track. Because of that Andrew would sometimes would go over and watch the karts race and practice. Andrew began to show some interest in getting a kart so they began to think about it.
It was about this time (Late 1997) that some friends told Roger about a new indoor kart rental track. So Roger went down and made a few laps with Andrew sitting it out because he was a little to short. You must be 5 foot tall to race the karts. He was not to happy about this so he told him we would look around for a kart for him to drive if he was interested.
They looked around locally and settled on a 2 year old kart with a 80 cc 2 stroke Comer engine. We picked it up on New Years Eve and were out running it the next day, although the PSGKA neighbors may not have been to happy for us to be out making noise on New Years day!
Andrew practiced for over 1000 laps at the PSGKA track before we ever even went to the first race where he was forced to race in the rainy winter series race at Bremerton Raceway in the rain without rain tires when everybody else had them but he still managed a 3rd place.
In his first PSGKA club race in March of 1998, Andrew surprised everybody by qualifying on the pole! Nobody realized how much he had practiced over the winter. Club rules force all drivers to start at the back of their class for their 1st 3 races so all day Andrew started at the back but he still finished 2nd for the day.
Andrew went on to finish his 1998 rookie season with 3 pole positions and a great 3rd place in the season points as well as a "Rookie of the Year" title.
